Back in the AD&D days (first edition, maybe getting close to or just after the release of 2nd) TSR published a game called Battlegrounds for mass combat between large armies which included rules for incorporating "heroes" (PCs) into the combat. Basically, if you were middling-high level you'd maybe lose a couple of hit points knocking out a squad of ten goblins, and it didn't take any longer to resolve than a normal round of 1 on 1 combat. "Heroes" in the system were probably overpowered, but it was fast and a lot of fun to be able to throw armies of cannon fodder at the party without it taking weeks to run the encounter.
