The strips • Episode 2529: The Sounds of Violence (non-spoiler)

(Comic Link)

The approach I like to take to mass combat is to have all units played by the same player—with the GM counting as a player for these purposes—who are all on the same side have one stat sheet.

So for example, if Poe here has a dozen Resistance speeders who all do what he commands, then all of the speeders firing at First Order units are a single damage roll by Poe, and the First Order units firing at the speeders are a single damage roll by the GM.

Of course you have to figure out what effects of Damage mean in mass combat scenarios for this to work. Does Poe taking damage apply equally to himself and the others? If Poe has perhaps 16 points of health, do the first 12 points of damage each pick off a speeder and only the last 4 start damaging Poe?

It either gets more or less complicated if you have multiple players waging mass combat at once. The speeders probably wouldn't be so fragile if Poe, Rose, and maybe Finn each have some, but on the other hand, then all of them have to make damage rolls for all of the speeders to attack, and the First Order attacks have to either be split between the players or only damage one.

Somehow I have a feeling that usual mass combat rules are more complicated than this, but I don't have a whole lot of examples. If any of you have any thoughts on how/where there are usual/unusual mass combat rules (and what you think of mine), I'd be happy to talk it over (and probably integrate feedback into future games)!
