I don't know for certain, but I think it's probably because of one of two things: (1) It's cheaper in some way, and/or (2) it's intended for a different media.
As to the latter, it could be that the new colors are intended for screens, or just better color printing. I know that comic books had a big transition in coloring starting in the 1990s that completely changed how comics looked, as subtle coloring suddenly became much more possible.
