I know it's hard to see the details of things in the comic images, but the sounds are coming from the sides of the cannon because that's where the clamps are mounted. The boxes on strings are towing units with lots of little legs underneath (All-Terrain Heavy Haulers).Ohhhhh, they're clamps for recoil! That seems more sensible than giant ground-based towing machines. Ignore that the sounds are coming from the sides of the cannon and not the box things on chains.
