Fun fact, Sergeant Sharp there is played by Gareth Edwards, director of Rogue One.
Although I just realized, getting wounded on Crait must be a miserable experience, as it's likely to involve a bunch of literal salt in the wound.
They're getting ready for a fight, he might not get another chance to taste it! :) It's basically a layer of sea salt, which people eat IRL all the time. If there's enough toxic mineral content in the salt to be dangerous in a taste, then everyone on the planet is probably already doomed from breathing in particles of it in the atmosphere. So it's probably a decent bet that the salt is (more or less) safe...... Why would anyone want to taste the ground? Like, even setting aside the idea that it could be edible and sensible, it's still the ground and you're getting ready for a fight. Why risk contamination and possible poisoning?
