I'm impressed that Memnarch instantly picked up on a major problem of the sequels: the lack of a top villain. In fact I'd say killing Snoke is the biggest failure of Episode 8.

As we know, in JJ's version "somehow Palpatine returned." The plan before him was Colin Trevorrow's Duel of the Fates script, in which "somehow Darth Plagueis's master is still alive." They both understood that if Kylo is meant to be even sightly redeemable, he needs someone to turn against. That's what happened here - except instead of the climax of the trilogy it's just slightly past the middle. And instead of it being dramatic and significant it's just a subverted expectation.

I want to give Rian Johnson some credit for breaking away from bloodlines and admitting that the Jedi weren't so perfect. But I can't imagine what the hell he was thinking for a final conflict. If he wanted Rey to be tempted or Kylo Ren to be obviously beyond redemption, this was the time to set that up but he didn't do that either.
