For the curious, while the Wikipedia page in the original annotation has since been turned into a redirect to a list of old D&D monsters in general, that page does have links to sources for some of those monsters - including the quadripedal, animalistic D&D gorgon. Apparently it came from old medieval bestiaries that may have been based on a mangled description of Medusa's sisters.
I've wondered about that for literally years (though not enough to search for answers myself) so it's kind of nice to finally know.

I do still wonder what the Gorgons look like in the Cliffhangers setting, since we never actually found out. Though they're apparently humanoid enough that Prof. Jones could mistake one for a museum attendant.
