What I find interesting about Hubert and Reba (well, just Reba) is that while she originally did seem to be interested in Jon's body, in their (sort of) last strip, she is suddenly frightened by it. Did his sanity snap in 1999 put her off him for good? Was it just her aging? Or was it him aging (how could she tell? Cartoon logic I guess?)? Well, I prefer the idea of them moving away to... well, you know. Headcanon accepted.
(And while I'm on the subject, I'm a little annoyed they were turned into antagonists in Here Comes Garfield because I think their Greek Chorus role would've worked really well in Garfield and Friends and later projects. Unfortunately, that casting probably killed any future animated appearances before they had a chance, seeing as how they're the ones who almost got Odie KILLED. They could've invented a new jerk neighbor, but no, we are stuck with Hubert the dog killer in the OG animated universe and I fear that shadow will hang over them for longtime fans. But maybe now I'm overthinking.)
ETA: After researching further, I realize Here Comes Garfield was there debut BEFORE their first strip. Well that just makes this all the more awkward. From the orchestrators of Odie's near-demise to the Greek Chorus I enjoy so much... I think I need to lie down.
