I've also read that the Rapa Nui were doing just fine until Europeans arrived and brought diseases against which the people had no immunity.
When the SECOND European explorers came past they reported that the population was sick and desperate, and blamed it on their lack of trees, etc.
But the FIRST European explorers reported no such problems... because the diseases came with the FIRST lot.
