I rather disagree with the author, for two reasons:
1: The joke of the original version of the strip works fine: Set up Garfield behaving very much not like himself, then reveal at the end, as a punchline, that it was a nightmare he was having all along. An actual "horror situation" nightmare does not work as the joke here at all.
2: In terms of existentially horrifying situations, can you imagine how it would feel to suddenly find yourself living through and "enjoying" a life that involves doing all of the things you normally hate, and none of the things you love? Basically being possessed by a demon (or possibly yeerk) that has a personality and beliefs diametrically opposed to your own? I'd definitely find that to be a proper nightmare, myself.
